Good-bye Manager, Hello Coach!
We have been in leadership roles and both of us have seen many styles of management come and go. The latest is coaching, and leadership. When the concept was first discussed, we bought books, read articles, basically anything we could get our hands on. A lot of what we read, though, cited models with a lot of theory and full of jargon.
Our own experience proved to be most valuable as we moved from managers to coaches. Now, a few years later, we feel the coaching method is our preferred style. The benefits and advantages of being a coach outweigh the job of a manager many times over! Coaching a team, encouraging teamwork, does bring results.
As we talk with our friends, however, we realize there are still people
struggling with the concept of the coach as leader.
