Short Stories The Dentist Opportunity by Byron Pulsifer, (c)2011 What has going to the dentist to do with opportunity? Is it the chance to repair, whiten or adjust my teeth? No, nothing like that at all. It really has more to do with what I can do than what the dentist can do. Here is the reason; it is an opportunity to sit and wait and read what I need to without having to answer the phone, or to be subjected to the demands that constantly bombard me if I stay and work at my home office. You see, going to the dentist gives me an opportunity to sit quietly and read. I love to read and I also love to acquire knowledge of a wide variety on a continuous basis. Reading is one activity that seems to be set aside as I go through a busy day. There are always numerous things that must be done on a daily basis and by the time it is time to call it a day, I can only squeeze in a few minutes for reading. In fact, I feel sorry for people who have not developed the passion for reading for one reason or another. I know, because I use it daily, that there are tremendous advantages to technology by way of computers, blackberries etc. but their use seems to be at the expense of sitting down with a great book and becoming lost within its pages. I find that there is a comfort level between a reader and an author where one seems to meld into the thoughts and passions of another even if this passion is a fictional book. Even of more interest for me, is the literature of knowledge, of biographies, or world events, of successful people, of courage, and of helping. So, if you have the opportunity to have a few minutes, or hours, take a good book, magazine or paper and use your time wisely. You probably have some opportunity to do so but may, instead, turn on the TV, or radio, or surf the web. It is not you cannot find time, it is more that you use the time you have. I also have had occasion recently to spend several hours helping build a very large deck and also to help finish a basement room with drywall and mudding and taping. Now, bear in mind that I also work at two businesses so time is always precious. I have been asked by both of these people who I have been helping where I find the time because they know I am very busy. The funny thing about busy people is that they are usually the ones that can find the time to do more than most would expect. Why is this? The simplest reason that busy people can find time to do more is that they all know how to manage their time, and they also know how to use time they have not only effectively but efficiently. There is a big difference between using time effectively and efficiently. Let me explain. To use time effectively basically means that you are always busy doing something that needs to be done but to use time both effectively and efficiently means that you are not only busy doing something but that you are using time to do what is most important. Here is an example to help clarify this very important point. Let us say that you have several things to do at work and one of these tasks is vitally important and others less so. You can use your time effectively by working on those lesser priorities and thus be effective but if you work on the priority you use your time effectively and efficiently to accomplish the priority task. The same applies to just shuffling paper around on your desk simply sorting it into piles to later do. Sure you are using time effectively because you may be very good at shuffling papers but this is not using your time efficiently when you could have, instead, been working on priority tasks. |
