By attempting to manage people you are limiting their potential. A manager is a title, it does not guarantee success. By Catherine Pulsifer, © 2004 C haracter - to be a coach requires strong character to show leadership O ptimism - to be a coach requires optimism A ction - to be a coach requires the ability to take action C ompassion - to be a coach requires the ability to show compassion H uman - to be a coach is to also remember you are human ~~~~~~~~~~~ A lot has been written about managing and coaching over the years and some of this information has come from former managers who really understand the difference between being a manager and a coach. Since I have been a manager for many years in the past, I have often observed many different styles. But, the most effective style was the one that started with respect for each individual, who treated each individual as unique in what they needed to do their job effectively, or to excel so that they could gain the experience needed to be considered for promotion. Not every person is suited to be a coach even though they may have been a great employee before with abundant skills and knowledge. The real difference is the set of people skills one possesses, and the additional people skills that they continue to develop as they move along through their different assignments. |
