What Do You Feed Your MindAuthor: Catherine Pulsifer
Every day we feed our bodies. Some of us over indulge; some of us don't eat the right balance of foods. Some of us eat fast foods.
You Feed More Than A Body
You can tell by a person's health how they feed their bodies. Those who are overweight usually over indulge; allow their diet to be fast foods. The majority of people are aware of the importance of proper diet. You know what you feed your body, but on what do you feed your mind? Feeding your brain is as important as feeding your body!
Television Is Not Always Good Food
One of my major concerns today is that a lot of people feed their mind with television. Television is like the fast food industry. I am not saying we can't learn from television, but the majority of what is on television is not of educational value or will not positively influence our thoughts.
We increasingly judge our success and personal worth by television stories - stories of the rich and famous, those who have beauty and the perfect body, and those who do little work and still succeed. Yet, this is not reality. Life is richer than what is depicted on television or you tube or any movie. Life is full of its own delights and the ingredients to a good recipe make for great food just as the ingredients of the recipe for the mind helps make a healthy mind.
When And What To Feed
As important it is to decide what you should eat it is also just as important to feed your mind with what helps it grow. The first thing that you must realize is that what you feed your mind is based on how much you love yourself. Does this sound strange? Let me explain.
One of the reverse strategies to developing the mindset of someone who wants to help others grow or recover from many of life's issues is dependent upon how much love you have within. In other words, the less you love yourself, the less love you have to spread to those around you. This inner love is expressed in terms of how well you look after your health by choosing the right foods at the right time, and by how much you feed your mind with a healthy dose of what is good and positive.
What you feed your mind is in direct proportion to how much love you can extend to others. It is a simple equation and it goes something like this. The more crap that enters your mind, the more your mind is weakened. For example, if you have a steady dose of everything evil and dark, your thoughts will not be positive and helpful. Unfortunately, there is a lot of information today available through a variety of mediums.
Never Lose This Important Ingredient
You can lose your job, you can lose material items, but you can never lose your knowledge. The money and time we invest in ourselves to further increase our knowledge is truly an investment in our future.
How many self-improvement books have you read over the last year? How many educational programs have you listened to that have helped you learn something new?
Continual Brain Diet
One of my favourite inspirational quotes is one by Peter Davies, "Motivation is like food for the brain. You cannot get enough in one sitting. It needs continual and regular top ups." Or consider this quote from Stirling Moss, "Relaxing your brain is fatal."
If you learned one new thing every day imagine what you would have learned in a year. Education does not stop when you finish school. All of life is an education. It truly is a continuous learning experience.
A Great Reflection For Life
James Allen wrote, "As A Man Thinketh", and the first sentence is a good one to reflect on: "Man is; and as he thinks, so he is. A perception and realization of these two facts alone-of man's being and thinking- lead into a vast avenue of knowledge which cannot stop short of the highest wisdom and perfection."
These Type Of Books Are Positive Mind Food
How you think is influenced by what your read, what you listen to. Reading books that have a positive influence on your thinking can truly change your life.
You may find your perceptions and beliefs challenged as you read these books. But, challenging our own beliefs is one way of learning to expand our thoughts and minds.
Exploring And Sharing Are Real Builders
You are never too old to learn. If you stop learning your brain starts dying. And if your brain is not kept alive and stimulated life can become very boring and dull.
Life is meant to be lived, to explore, to learn and to share. Sharing your knowledge is one of the greatest gifts a person can give. And, as you teach, you will find yourself learning.
One thing I realized many years ago is a reflection of what I still do today. It is a desire to share what I have learned with those who are willing students. By this I mean that not everyone wants to learn or to increase their knowledge. It is something like leading a horse to water but you cannot make them drink. It is the same for the opportunity to learn. Everyone one of us has a chance to keep learning; in fact, it is a choice. You can choose to waste your time watching television, or bowling, or going out with your friends multiple times a week, or fiddle away your time tinkering with all sorts of things that do not need your vital and important time. Instead, you could be reading books in your particular career area, or books that help prepare you for a better career or for advancement in your current job. You can read thousands upon thousands of information articles on the Internet and all it will cost you is your computer and Internet time.
There is no excuse for those living in the developed countries around the world to lapse into thinking that once you have finished high school or your university degree that you are finished learning. From my experience, the people who did the best throughout the years are those who understood the value of continuous learning. Stretch your mind and you will stretch who you are. You will not only help develop your own mind but when you share your knowledge or convey your enthusiasm for continuous learning you help those who are around you to do the same.
One of your legacies can be your personal enthusiasm for learning. How is this possible? It is possible because you show the love of learning, of sharing, and helping others get more out of their life than they could by watching television or playing pool, or bowling, or curling, or going out to a bar or to dinner. A legacy of learning is a legacy of love. It is a love for your own mind; it is a love that shares knowledge; it is a love that sparks another onward in their own quest for personal development.
To summarize, I will leave you with a few inspirational quotes to consider and think about: "The mind grows by what it feeds on." What have you fed your mind with in the last month? J. G. Holland
"People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing - that's why we recommend it daily." Zig Ziglar
"You may plan to write a book some day, but you are living a book every day." Wilferd Peterson
"Successful people are very often early risers. From Richard Branson to Michelle Obama, and Tim Cook to Taylor Swift, all are known to get up early. Whatever their motivation, they've all used beating the alarm clock to become the elite in their profession." Joe Hinchliffe, Average Joe's Success Rituals: 12 Disciplines for a Fulfilling Life
