A Poem of Hope

When life is getting you down, and you need a little hope.
Look deep down inside yourself, and you’ll find the way to cope.

When life is getting you down, and you need a little love.
Go to the person whom you are the closest, as the rest they are above.

When life is getting you down, and all you need is a laugh.
Find the friend that makes you smile, they may even be your staff.

When life is getting you down, don’t allow it so.
Change the way you think of life, and life will be better, you know.

When life is getting you down, don’t sit and mope
Take action and always have hope.

When life is getting you down, take time to pray
Don’t allow yourself to frown God will help you see the blessings of the day.

Be Vigilant . . . Not Late
James 5: 13-15

Poet: Greta Zwaan, ©2010

Pray in the time of sorrow; sing in the time of joy,
Give voice to the inner emotions; in trust your faith deploy.
When sickness overtakes you, when days cause endless pain,
It seems life has no meaning, commitments are quite in vain.

How can one think of singing when sorrows pile so deep?
Rejoice amidst the trials when one would rather weep?
Give thanks to God in all things; the happy times, the good,
As well in disappointments, when youre misunderstood.

God doesnt say, “FOR all things,” when crisis come your way,
But in the darkened valleys, theres always room to pray.
God’s patience never falters; his ears hear your request,
Your anxious cry for mercy, when you can find no rest.

He longs to draw you closer, He seeks to draw you near;
But life keeps you so busy, His voice seems not too clear.
Then God allows a valley where you might seek His face,
A time of concentration, renewing of His grace.

God never left His posting, He did not stray away,
Its you who did the wandering, so busy every day.
The path youre on is fruitless; your spirit cannot grow,
So God puts up a barrier were you ought not to go.

Hence comes the heavenly message: “Be thankful IN all things,”
Perhaps enduring hardships the bell of danger rings.
Pay heed, the call is vital; God’s calling carries weight,
Accept the challenge quickly, be vigilant, not late.

Be thankful IN all things
Thanksgiving

Help My Soul To Rise
Poet: Greta Zwaan, ©2011

In the wilderness of depression my heart has sunk so low;
I long for a solution but I don’t know where to go.
I have this guilty complex, as if the fault were mine,
As if somehow Id ventured through a “NO ADMITTANCE” sign.

I feel I ought not be here, I’ve better things to do;
Yet I can’t seem to focus, Im simply muddling through.
My tears are always present, appearing just at will;
I feel nobody loves me, my world is oh, so still.

In crowds I feel an outcast, as if I don’t belong,
I cannot speak to strangers within a noisy throng.
My mind is all confusion, my heart is full of fear,
I cant find any solace, what am I doing here?

With haste I rush for shelter far from this mob, this crowd;
No matter what the function, theyre all so terribly loud.
Back to my silent enclave, to loneliness and pain,
To sort out troubled feelings that surface once again.

How do I cast this burden? Find peace to fill my soul?
Where do I get my answers? How do I find control?
Can someone please direct me? Can someone give me hope?
Within this darkened valley I can no longer cope.

The world’s so dark and dreary, I may decide to leave,
I’ve tried but I can’t conquer, I just cannot achieve.
If you could feel compassion, if you would be my friend,
Perhaps Id seek renewal, perhaps my world won’t end.

I need you to stand by me, but not to criticize,
Give me a firm foundation, PLEASE! Help my soul to rise.

As You Travel Through Life
Poet Unknown (Thanks to Kim for submitting)

As you travel through life there are always those times
When decisions just have to be made,
When the choices are hard, and solutions seem scarce,
And the rain seems to soak your parade.

There are some situations where all you can do
Is simply let go and move on,
Gather your courage and choose a direction
That carries you toward a new dawn.

So pack up your troubles and take a step forward –
The process of change can be tough,
But think about all the excitement ahead

There might be adventures you never imagined
Just waiting around the next bend,
And wishes and dreams just about to come true
In ways you can’t yet comprehend!

Perhaps you’ll find friendships
that spring from new things
As you challenge your status quo,
And learn there are so many options in life,

Perhaps you’ll go places you never expected
And see things that you’ve never seen,
Or travel to fabulous, faraway worlds
And wonderful spots in between!

Perhaps you’ll find warmth and affection and caring
And somebody special who’s there
To help you stay cantered and listen with interest
To stories and feelings you share.

Perhaps you’ll find comfort in knowing your friends
Are supportive of all that you do,
And believe that whatever decisions you make,
They’ll be the right choices for you.

So keep putting one foot in front of the other,
And taking your life day by day…
There’s a brighter tomorrow that’s just down the road –
Don’t look back! You’re not going that way!

Life is an opportunity
Quotes about Life  |   Poems about Life

Life is a
by Catherine Pulsifer, ©2012

Life is an opportunity, seize the day, live each day to the fullest.
Life is not a project, but a journey to be enjoyed.

Life is a gift, accept it, enjoy it, and be happy with it.
Life is a challenge, but challenges can always be overcome.

Life is to be lived, not to be dreamed.
Life is a wonder, if you sit back and be thankful.

Life is a decision each of us makes, to be happy or sad.
Life is a time for new beginnings and endings.

Life is a balance, take time for play not just work.
Life is a joy for those who are optimistic.

Life is a bundle of possibilities if you just look for them.
Life is a meant to do, not to regret.
Life is no bed of roses but life is what you make it.

Life Is No Bed of Roses
Poet: John McLeod, © 2003

Life is no bed of roses
For roses have thorns, you see,
But handling with care and balance
Will protect from injury.

All gardens have seasons of beauty
Where the flowers of our living grow
With colours and shapes aplenty
Sweet fragrance to bestow.

Life’s flowers need careful tending
For all life needs sun and rain,
And Love and Faith unending
For Hope to flower again!

Do Not Forget To Hope
Poet: John McLeod ©1982

Do not forget to hope
Though Time spins fleeting on
There is a place for all
To view the promised dawn
When Life’s full test have run
Like rivers to the sea
Do not forget to hope
And happy be.

Do not forget to hope
For even when one’s life
Seems burdened down with care
And melancholy strife
Remember how the gulls
Soar beautiful and free?
Do not forget to hope
And happy be.

Do not forget to hope
Nor rise above the gloom
All colours, as they say,
Are needed on Life’s Loom,
And ‘dark before the dawn’
Is truth that all may see?
Do not forget to hope
And happy be.

We can learn much about faith from hope and love, just as we can learn much about love from faith and hope. Mark Jones
We can learn much about faith from hope and love,
just as we can learn much about love from faith and hope.

Hope – Faith – Love
Poet: Reinhold Niebuhr

Nothing that is worth doing can be achieved in our lifetime;
therefore we must be saved by hope.

Nothing which is true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history;
therefore we must be saved by faith.

Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone;
therefore we must be saved by love.

No virtuous act is quite as virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe as it is from our standpoint.
Therefore we must be saved by the final form of love which is forgiveness.

Keep On The Sunny Side
Poet: Unknown

There’s a dark and a troubled side of life.
There’s a bright, theres a sunny side, too.
Tho’ we meet with the darkness and strife
The sunny side we also may view.
Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side,
Keep on the sunny side of life.
It will help us ev’ry day, it will brighten all the way
If we’ll keep on the sunny side of life.

The storm and its fury broke today,
Crushing hopes that we cherish so dear;
Clouds and storms will, in time, pass away.
The sun again will shine bright and clear.

Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side,
Keep on the sunny side of life.
It will help us ev’ry day, it will brighten all the way
If well keep on the sunny side of life.

Let us greet with the song of hope each day
Tho’ the moment be cloudy or fair.
Let us trust in our Saviour away
Who keepeth everyone in His care.

Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side,
Keep on the sunny side of life.
It will help us ev’ry day, it will brighten all the way
If we’ll keep on the sunny side of life.

Hope Keeps Us Going
Poet: Kate Summers ©2018

Hope keeps us going
even when the answers are not knowing.
No matter what is going on
Hope can let us look forward to the new dawn.

The saying “this too shall pass”
Gives us hope in mass.
Life is full of ups and downs
We must keep hope and not frown.

Hope for better days
Is a good prayer to pray.
Focus on your blessings
Don’t just sit and be stressing.

Never lose your hope
Hoping and action lets you cope.
Having hope helps live move on
By focusing on the good, your problems will be gone.

Changing Directions
Poet: Greta Zwaan, ©2008

We don’t have any rights; we’re merely given privileges,
We’re here but for the briefest span of time.
We’re given to believe that we’ll be here forever,
We have the means to make our lives sublime.

We treat the earth as though we were its maker,
We disregard rules to help keep it pure.
Abuse is so rampant, the evidence destructive,
Its obvious that this cannot endure.

Why have we turned so selfish? Why is it we destroy?
The very essence of what gives us life.
Don’t we see tomorrow is part of today’s great plan?
We need to change our ways of greed and strife.

God made us protectors to sow and plough the fields,
To reap the harvest and prepare to share,
Not to think we are owners, or that we might have the power,
But to show unto others that we care.

If we destroy the planet because of our of our neglect,
If we cause damage that we can’t repair,
In future generations the blame will fall on us,
The damage done will drive us to despair.

Wake up and test the waters; there may still be a way,
To turn the tide that seems to swing uphill.
Take stock of your perspectives; think not where you’ve gone wrong,
And fight the battle with your might and will.

Perhaps there’s still an answer, an avenue of hope,
It could be that you’ll turn this thing around.
The project is worth trying, you must do all you can;
Who knows, through you an answer may be found.

Don’t Give Up
Poet: Greta Zwaan, ©2011

The ladder of prayer is the way to the Lord,
It’s taken one step at a time.
Salvation is instant, but growing is not;
The way can be steep, hard to climb.

Instant solutions don’t often occur,
The lessons of life must be borne.
The purging fire that strengthens the soul
May leave you tattered and torn.

Your tears might flow, your heart distressed,
You feel you cannot hold on.
It’s then that prayer connects to the faith
When you felt that all hope was gone.

God never leaves His child alone,
God never walks away.
He knows your needs before you ask,
He always hears when you pray.

Don’t give up if you can’t see
His answer right away,
But trust the fact that God is there,
Alongside you every day.

God's grace is sufficient for those that believe and trust in Him until the end. E'yen A Gardner

In Weakness You’re Made Strong
Poet: Greta Zwaan, ©1998

Oh Lord, I am so far in debt, there’s no way I can pay.
And yet, my creditors demand, accounting every day.
It’s come at last to strike with fear that all I have I’ll lose.
I know not where to turn for help. I know not what to choose.

My nights are sleepless, drained of rest, I ponder my dark fate;
I walk the floor, I grind my teeth, when will despair abate?
Each avenue that I have tried, the burden has increased,
I weep at what’s befallen me. Can I not be released?

Whose loving arms can comfort me? Whose voice can draw me near?
And give me courage to go on, to bring a note of cheer?
A still small voice, a clear reply, I hear respond to me:
“Oh, child, My child, Why do you fret for things you cannot see?

The trials that you are facing now are meant to make you grow,
To strengthen faith, to draw you near, to help you fight the foe.”
With every fragrant rose that blooms the thorns embrace the stem,
Yet no one would refuse a rose – the sweetest, purest gem.

‘Tis hardships that refine the gold, makes perfect every grain,
‘Tis fire heated to it’s peak that melts and moulds for gain.
The leaves that fall from autumn trees and makes the tree look dead
Are fodder for the next year’s growth, with which the fruit is fed.

When forests are besieged by fire and flames engulf the land
The dust and ashes that remain will sprout new life again.
Oh yes, we shrink from hurt and pain, avoiding trials and tears,
But there’s no better way for growth then days touched by earth’s fears.

For in your weakness you’re made strong, through trusting in God’s grace,
And by and by you’ll understand when climaxed is earth’s race.
Your questions will be answered then, your trials will be no more,
Perfection, joy, eternal peace, are yours on heaven’s shore.

My Only Hope
Poet: Greta Zwaan, © 2010

I’m sitting in God’s waiting room, I’m hoping for attention;
I’ve been here for a long, long while; a time I cannot mention.
Because the years have crept along and still I plead for healing,
It seems the answers do not come, to me there’s no revealing.

I long to hear that still, small voice tell me it’s not forever;
Soon all my pain will God dispel, my misery He will sever.
Maybe, like Paul, I need this thorn, I know there is a reason,
I’d be contented if I knew, no matter time or season.

It’s patience that I’m pleading for, a quiet understanding;
Though healing would be wonderful, it’s not what I’m demanding.
As long as God walks by my side, as long as He’s my soul mate,
As long as He’s my constant Guide, it’s by His grace that I’ll wait.

No better place, no higher ground, can give the peace that He brings;
Through trials, tears and hurting heart my hope alone to Him clings.
