A Vacation Attitude

Author: 2010

I get more done in the week before I go on vacation than I do in the previous month.

Why?
Because I am
focused. I know exactly what must be accomplished before I feel comfortable leaving for vacation. The tasks that were sitting there for months now seem to have an urgency to get them done. It is amazing when the piles that sat there and could wait until tomorrow now are getting done.

Why can't we have this
attitude everyday? The reason is that we know we will be there tomorrow, and we allow, "time wasters" to creep into our day and steal our time. Or, we allow procrastination to take over. We can be very busy but achieve few results.

Develop This Attitude
We need to develop a "vacation attitude" every day by being focused on what we need to accomplish by the end of each day. By focusing on results, we are spending our
time wisely. By developing this attitude, we dramatically improve our performance, our productivity and our value to others.

The Advantages
The advantages to our
vacation attitude is more than doing what we have to do; it is more about feeling that we have done our very best to accomplish what is needed, and with the result that we can leave for the day knowing that we did our very best. We can go home after work knowing that our evening time is our own - it is our reward to do with as we see fit without any nagging thoughts of work that should have been done. Not only are you of greater value to your employer but you are also demonstrating to yourself that you are of great value, and a value that you can be proud of.

Too Many People Do This
There are far too many people who think that the only reason to go to work is to put in the day as easily as possible so they can leave on time and get home. Every one of these types of people has a mindset that there is no urgency to work hard. Instead, they simply put in time - they show up for work and spend more time trying to figure out how to avoid work than to do work. There are also those who spend more time complaining about everything that is wrong with their work and never make one attempt to contribute to improving their work or their work environment. They seem to relish in the fact that they create problems for their supervisors rather than any attempt to resolve issues by being proactive or making positive suggestions.

The really sad thing about those people who spend more time finding what is wrong or seeing what they can do to avoid work is that their day is much longer and harder to complete than those who are positive, upbeat and look to find resolutions to current issues.

A Sense of Accomplishment
If you think of each day as an opportunity to excel at what is asked of you, and to
work consistently and avoid negative thinking, you will find that your day finishes feeling a sense of accomplishment for what you did well rather than a sense of just putting in time. Take a vacation attitude with you daily and reward yourself with a good pat on the back for getting done whatever is humanly possible.

Eliminate time wasters by adopting a vacation attitude!
