Moving Forward Maybe

It wasn’t that long ago that I thought everything was moving forward but then that appeared to be a false picture. Sometimes, our progress forward, for whatever reason, takes a turn for the worse and a lot of times it may not be something we necessarily did or did not do. A lot of change is happening around us and many changes are not under our control. So, what do we do if this happens?

A Common Reaction
A common reaction to things taking a turn for the worse whether in business or private life is to fall into a state of despair. We start to fret and worry, and wonder what happened, or what to do.

For some, this despair leads to a state of doing absolutely nothing – it is like being stuck in the mud with your car and just sitting there shaking your head but doing nothing, it is as though you are waiting for a magical cure or a knight in white armor to come along and save you.

But, the reality is that there are few while knights around these days so we have to accept ownership of our own situation – unfortunately, we also can’t give it to anyone else to do something about or to resolve the issue.

My Situation
In my case, it was a business issue that cascaded a negative effect. At first, I was totally baffled as to why the issue arose. And, like a lot of people, I didn’t know what to do only guessing what may have happened.

Now, being only human, I first felt defeated after having worked so hard and long to develop a successful business. But, I knew that I just couldn’t accept what had happened; it was not in my nature to just accept defeat.

What Next?
Give in, quit, or dig my heels in and conquer again?

For many of us, the best thing to do to get ourselves back on an even keel is to talk our issues over with close friends. For others, they may not have this opportunity but, in this case, a discussion with another acquaintance in a similar business.

For me, I was fortunate enough to discuss these critical business issues with my best friend, and together, clarify a course or a strategy to follow to start and realign the downward slope and begin the crawl up again. I believe it is vitally important to get back into action, not to dwell on past successes, or to get mired in the poor me syndrome where it becomes easy to blame everything and everyone else for problems.

The short version of this story is that after considerable analysis, formulating a step-by-step action plan, momentum is now building towards steady movement forward.

Same Amount of Energy
It is easy to give in, quit, or become stuck in the past. But, remember this, it takes just as much energy to move forward as it does to engage in self-destructive moaning, blaming, and being miserable.
