Difficulties in Life

Author: By Paxton Hood

There are few positions in life in which difficulties have not to be encountered. These difficulties are, however, our best instructors, as our mistakes often form our best experience.

We learn wisdom from failure more than from success. We often discover what will do by finding out what will not do.

Horne Tooke used to say that he had become all the better acquainted with the country from having the good luck sometimes to lose his way.

Great thoughts, discoveries, inventions have very generally been nurtured in hardship, often pondered over in sorrow and established with difficulty.

More thoughts and words of wisdom from Paxton Hood:

"Be as careful of the books you read, as of the company you keep;
for your habits and character will be as much influenced by the former as by the latter."

"What is mind? No matter.
What is matter? Never mind.
What is the soul? It is immaterial."

"When we advance a little into life,
we find that the tongue of man creates nearly all the mischief of the world."

"Weeds grow sometimes very much like flowers,
and you can't tell the difference between
true and false merely by the shape."

"The small stones which fill up crevices
have almost as much to do with making the
fair and firm wall as the great rocks;
so the wise use of spare moments contributes
not a little to the building up in good proportions a man's mind."
