Just The Other Day
I had the privilege; yes I said privilege, of baby-sitting my little granddaughter who is just a little over two-years old. And, do you know what came to mind? Very simply it was this.
I sat beside her on my daughter’s couch watching one of her favorite little shows. And, as she was watching it, she turned to me and said, “Gramps, more please.” She was referring to my muffin that I was eating and I had already shared a little morsel with her.
It was her quiet, calm, and loving voice that made me feel that I would do absolutely anything to protect her, to encourage her, and to give her all the loving she needed no matter when or where. It was my desire to keep her safe and wish for a beautiful life that unfolded through my eyes as she silently ate her little morsel of muffin.
It was then that I quietly mouthed a prayer to God that I may help in my small way of being there for her for many years to come; that I would continue to play a part in her life that she valued, and a part that she would turn to as she grew older and needed to talk about anything that was either bothering her or she did not quite understand.
These are not just words from a grandparent who felt trapped into baby-sitting but from a loving grandparent who values every moment with her. It is not the same love and care given by my daughter and son-in-law, but a special love and bond that goes beyond expression.
Parents and Grandparents
The prayers of a parent for their child are those that seek to keep them safe, well, and protected. But, the prayers of a Grandfather are to keep us well enough so we can continue to share in these special moments for many, many years to come.
