Beyond Yesterday

What does yesterday mean in your life? You may believe that yesterday has a hold over you because of what you did or didn’t do.

Well, that may be the case for the few that have committed an illegal act that cannot be undone, but for the rest of us, yesterday is gone, it is over. This feeling also applies to hurts, and pains, and transgressions by others for to keep yesterday alive is to deny that today is a new beginning, a new day, a new opportunity.

Your Focus
Yesterday is past and today is here and tomorrow has to wait. The here and now is where your life resides. The focus should be what you do today to make the day the best you can. This applies to what you do at work where you should do your job to the best of your abilities and not slough off tasks until another day, or let one of your colleagues pick up your slack.

Value OthersToday also means that you value everyone’s feelings and that you really listen openly to what each person has to say rather than just wanting to put your two cents worth into the conversation without really understanding what is being said or asked to you.

This also means that today you demonstrate that you are flexible in your attitude and perceptions and that it is more important to see the common ground with others and not important to have your views accepted as the only ones that matter.

Your Accomplishments
Today also means that you focus on what has to be accomplished today keeping in mind the big picture that makes up what needs to be done over time. However, since you know that there is nothing that can be accomplished all in one day, you will concentrate totally on accomplishing the needed work today.

Today means that you are able to be adaptive and not reactionary. You know that when confronted by a particular challenge or obstacle that is far more effective to look for a solution and not to be stuck in the problem. Problems can easily mire you in a complaint cycle where nothing is accomplished except frustration but searching for solutions gives you hope rather than wishing for a way around or through the problem.

What are your thoughts when you hear “today also means”.

Relax Your Mind
One of the other thoughts that you should have as one day starts is that which allows your mind to relax in preparation for another day. So, what does this mean?

It means that you use each day to the absolute fullest you can but you must reserve a block of time to let your mind concentrate on those things or activities that are not directed towards further accomplishment of that which you are now fully engaged. It means that each evening, you set time aside to go for a brisk walk where you let your mind focus on nature and everything that is happening around you. You observe and absorb the happenings of other life forms to be fully engaged in what they are doing. Or, you take a fictional book or a non-fiction book and immerse your mind in the story where you see yourself in the same story as the main character. The reason for this activity is to focus your mind totally away from your concerns, thoughts, or activities so that you release your sub-conscious mind to fill in the thoughts that occupy your normal day.

Reduce Your Stress
During the process of involving your mind in other more relaxing activity will allow you to also recharge your own mind as well as relieve any stress that has build during the day. We al know the benefits of reducing stress but a clear regimen of devising these stress relieving activities just thinking about them and instead doing them has a lot to do with your vigor and stamina.
