The Big Achievement

The Big Achievement

Author:

Once upon a time, there was a man who knew he could achieve whatever he wanted. He wasn’t a big man, nor was he highly educated. He never really had a presence that people noticed when he walked into the room and he never appeared anywhere except in jeans and t-shirts, except in winter of course.

The Same Story
But, there was always the same story heard from his lips whenever you stopped to talk to him or he cornered you in the local store. The story went something like this: I will achieve some big things in my life and I will get to most of them real soon. I know I can succeed at anything I put my mind to so look out.

On The Verge Of
He wasn’t a mean man, in fact he was a very kind man once you got around the usual discussion about how much he was going to achieve. I saw him occasionally over the next few years and each time I spoke with him he was still going to achieve more than anyone would ever think. The problem was that he still hadn’t taken one step to implement any of his dreams – no actions at all.

You probably can guess what happened next. Well, maybe you just have a little inkling. As the years passed by, and I went on my way to several new adventures in business, he remained where he was – same house, same job, and the same dreams. The last I heard of him just before I moved away was that he was not very well and had a hard time getting around.

I have been in my new location now for several years and recently was speaking with an old friend who also new this man. It seems that not that long ago, he passed away from a prolonged illness. I asked about whether he had achieved what he wanted or had started to take action towards any of his many dreams. The sad answer was no.

Understand The Wisdom of Albert Einstein
When I think of this man, I wish he understood the wisdom said by Albert Einstein;”The value of achievement lies in the achieving.”

For this man, there was no achievement for he was achieving nothing of his dreams. He lacked the preparation so he would know what he had to do one step at a time, and he lacked action, any action. There is no achievement made through a dream unless there is dedicated movement, action steps, and perseverance to continue, that which has been started.

The Point In This Story?
There are several points here that can make the ultimate difference between dreaming and actually achieving. One of these points is that without a solid and detailed plan that covers each necessary step combined with absolute firm target dates for each step, you can spend your entire lifetime dreaming.

The other important point is that in order to accomplish a dream, action must be taken. There is also the point to consider through any venture in life whether that is a decision to marry, or to have children, or to move to a new house. There are always risks associated with any decision and any choice. There are absolutely no guarantees that the person you choose to marry will be the last person you will ever be married to, just like a decision to buy a certain house may not end up being the best choice down the road if that house happened to be located close to where a major highway was eventually built.

But, you will never know where a dream will end up unless you do something, anything. Or, you can go through life always wondering what would have happened if you had taken action and not just simply talked.
