Always Count That Day
Poet:
, © 2012

As we age we realize that,
Our days on earth are few.
And with that thought we start to think,
There were days we just ran through.

These were usually days gone fast,
Because they weren’t much fun.
And when we look back in our thoughts,
These days are often gone.

Wasted days are not so good,
Especially when we have so few.
Even days that aren’t so good,
Are days I have with you.

So from now on my attitude will change,
And I will count that day.
The days of good, the days of bad,
Will all be my days array.

I will count that day no matter what,
And I will always remember it.
Life is too short as it is,
And this I will admit.

No more will I skip a day,
Or erase it from my mind.
I’ll take each moment of each day,
And be thankful and kind.

“Happiness comes of the capacity to feel deeply,
to enjoy simply, to think freely, to risk life, to be needed.”
Storm Jameson

How To Live To One Hundred
Poet: Julie Hebert, © 2017

How does one live to one hundred?
If you were to ask me,
How does one live to one hundred?
I would have to answer,
That’s one question I’ve always wondered.

But if I were to guess,
This would be my thoughts:
First make your life much lighter,
And untie any knots.

Don’t live only for yourself,
Allow others to be first.
Those who think of others,
Will never feel their worst.

Don’t procrastinate,
Life is way too short.
Do things as they come to you,
Live your life like a high-speed sport.

And last of all I’d have to say,
Love yourself as a whole.
Loving yourself in and out,
Must be good for the soul!

“Our greatest challenge our greatest opportunity is found in these words:
Choose ye this day . . .”

Keep Pegging Away
Poet: Nixon Waterman

Men seldom mount at a single bound
To the ladder’s very top;
They must slowly climb it, round by round,
With many a start and stop.
And the winner is sure to be the man
Who labors day by day,
For the world has learned that the safest plan
Is to keep on pegging away.

You have read, of course, about the hare
And the tortoise–the tale is old–
How they ran a race–it counts not where–
And the tortoise won, we’re told.
The hare was sure he had time to pause
And to browse about and play,
So the tortoise won the race because
He just kept pegging away.

A little toil and a little rest,
And a little more earned than spent,
Is sure to bring to an honest breast
A blessing of glad content.
And so, though skies may frown or smile,
Be diligent day by day;
Reward shall greet you after while
If you just keep pegging away.

Those We Love
Poet: Unknown

They say the world is round – and yet
I often think it’s square,
So many little hurts we get
From corner’s here and there.

But there’s one truth in life I’ve found
While journeying east and west,
The only folks we really wound
Are those we love the best.

We flatter those we scarcely know,
We please the fleeting guest,
And deal full many a thoughtless blow
To those we love the best

Home
Poet: Edgar A. Guest

The road to laughter beckons me,
The road to all that’s best;
The home road where I nightly see
The castle of my rest;
The path where all is fine and fair,
And little children run,
For love and joy are waiting there
As soon as day is done.

There is no rich reward of fame
That can compare with this:
At home I wear an honest name,
My lips are fit to kiss.
At home I’m always brave and strong,
And with the setting sun
They find no trace of shame or wrong
In anything I’ve done.

There shine the eyes that only see
The good I’ve tried to do;
They think me what I’d like to be;
They know that I am true.
And whether I have lost my fight
Or whether I have won,
I find a faith that I’ve been right
As soon as day is done.
