Finally Made It

It is strange how some of us seem to have finally made it to where we want to go, have things we’ve worked hard for, and start to think that we can relax and enjoy what life has to offer. Unfortunately, life also has some rude awakenings in mind for a lot of us.
Stevie’s Case
This was the case for Stevie. He worked hard, saved his money for many years, and then was able to buy a really nice home on a cliff overlooking the ocean. It seemed that all his work paid off for him and that he had finally realized a dream.
No Control
Well, as life would have it, along came events over which he had no control. First of all, the cliff where his house was, started to erode badly from the constant winds and rains over the years. There was no natural rock face so the cliff was subject to steady erosion. What was once a one hundred foot backyard was rapidly shrinking week by week, and, to make matters even worse, he became very ill to the point where he had to take a lot of time off from work.
Tragic Event
Well, the most tragic then happened. The cliff eroded so much so that the backyard totally disappeared and all that was left was the back of the house sitting perilously on the edge of the cliff. There was nothing that could be done. The cliff was over one hundred feet high so no matter what someone wanted to do to try and save the house, it was really impossible given the topography.
So, the next that happened seemed inevitable and that is what transpired – the house went over the cliff but fortunately not before they got out. But, what was even more devastating was that they had no house insurance because they could not get any from insurance companies who knew of the risks. No insurance, and so sick that he couldn’t work – now what? A person who thought they had finally reached the dreams they had worked so hard for and now only to find almost everything had vanished through no fault of their own.
The Good News
The good news was that he wasn’t done – fortunate for him and his family, good friends, neighbors and even those who didn’t know him personally responded to fund raisers and donations to help them secure enough money to start over. And, they did.
Life Has A Way . . .
Life has a way of turning around and kicking us in the backside and even kicking us again when we are really down and out. But, life also gives us a way out if we look for it; there is kindness, and solace as well as an opportunity to start again if we have a desire, a desire that uses what has been dished out as fuel to move forward and not accept what has happened as the final play.
We never know what may happen to any of us as time rolls on. But, it is not a life to be feared, a life to shudder and quake at every little sound or event; nor is it a life that can stay the same for either good or bad. We are not intended to hide in a closet or in an environment where change cannot find us. We are meant to keep focused for new life, for new beginnings, for new experiences, and to use our abilities to move beyond all those things that may serve as excuses to confine us to the now.
