Giving Is Fun

For some people, the opportunity to help others never crosses their mind. For others, though, not giving is something that never crosses their minds.
And, for those who sit on the shoulders of life's roads thinking that they will think about it, the time never seems to come.
So, why is it that some people give constantly while others do not?
Giving Is Not Just About Money
Well, I can't speak for everyone but I can tell you that giving can take many forms and it is not always about money. Some people are the first ones to respond when a neighbor loses everything in a fire. They offer shelter in their own homes, feed them and give them whatever clothes they have. Others, respond to the needs of the destitute and give of their time to volunteer in preparing meals at a dedicated center, or use their own vehicles to deliver food to anyone that is required.
There are also those who give of clothes, food to the food bank, or money to help with flood victims, hurricanes, or earthquakes and tsunamis.
It wasn't that long ago that there was another famine in Africa and many Canadian news broadcasters were questioning whether the population was tapped out with no more to give especially since we had been responding and giving to what appeared a string of disasters of great proportion. But, that didn't stop the funds from coming in despite the requests for more and more.
So, Why Do Some People Give
I think the answer lies in part of the cultural fabric, part of one's upbringing and part of where we live and what we value. For the most part, my opinion is that we not only value other people no matter where but we find that giving allows us to feel that we have at least contributed to easing the pain and suffering just the same as one would try and ease the pain of a family member who had suffered a great loss.
I have also found that a lot of people contribute despite the fact that they are the ones who can least afford it. Maybe it has something to do with their personal ethics, or for the fact that they are just thankful that a disaster has not befallen them.
The world is now an open book - we see, hear and learn about devastating social issues, disasters, death and famine in the blink of an eye. No longer can the people of the world say they didn't know because it was not in the newspaper or heard on the radio.
But, there is more to giving financially to those in need. There is a real need for care and concern for our elderly citizens that often go unrecognized when world disaster strikes. It is seldom seen where there are campaigns mounted to assist our seniors through caring, acknowledgement when they need it the most.
We All Have So Much To Give
What about giving of your kindness, your acknowledgement of seniors with your own community. There are numerous senior citizens who live alone and have no family to check in on them or care for them when they cannot go out of their house or apartment to get the basic necessities.
To give to the assistance of seniors is something that can be done without thinking about how much money you have to spare, or if there are charitable organizations that spend more on their clients and less on administrative costs. All it costs you is a little time but the pay back is huge. This is part of giving - giving of your caring and attention. It can be done part-time and does not need to cause you any inconvenience. After all, we will all be old at some point and would it not be great if we could expect just a little attention and caring?
Giving so that others may be helped is a purpose of life that we should all embrace.
